Admin 02-04-2026 Law and order

The Supreme Court strongly criticized the assault on judicial officers during SIR duties in Malda, West Bengal, and instructed the Election Commission to assign CBI or NIA for investigation and ensure central forces are deployed to protect the officers.

On 2 April 2026, the Supreme Court of India took urgent notice of a protest in Malda, West Bengal, where judicial officers performing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work were surrounded by demonstrators, blocked from leaving, and attacked with sticks and stones. The Chief Justice highlighted the severity of the incident, pointing out that even a small child accompanying the officers was deprived of food and water.

The Court stressed that such lawlessness is unacceptable, and state authorities must act to protect officers executing their official duties. Senior advocates, the Solicitor General, and Election Commission representatives appeared for an urgent hearing. The Supreme Court ordered that the investigation be handled by the CBI or NIA and that central security forces be deployed to ensure the safety of judicial personnel.
